Scientific Name: Apodemus argenteus [TAX:61837] Lineage: cellular organisms; Eukaryota; Opisthokonta; Metazoa; Eumetazoa; Bilateria; Deuterostomia; Chordata; Craniata Reciprocal‐removal experiments with two replicates were conducted to test for the role of interspecific competition in the coexistence of Apodemus argenteus and A. speciosus. Population density, rate of appearance of new (unmarked) individuals, reproduction, survival rate and habitat use were monitored during pre‐ and removal periods. A. argenteus, which is the direct competitor of A. speciosus, and is also widely distributed across the Japanese archipelago - taken together, the two Apodemus are the most abundant rodents in Japan (Abe, 1994; Sekijima & Sone, 1994). There is some evidence that A. speciosus exerts some competitive pressure over A. argenteus (Sekijima & Sone The size and spatial distribution of home ranges in two sympatric field mouse species, Apodemus speciosus and Apodemus argenteus, were revealed by the capture‐recapture method in a temperate deciduous forest from June 1987 to June 1990. The taxonomic history of the Japanese Wood Mouse ("Himenezumi" in Japanese) is reviewed. Two scientific names have been widely used: Apodemus argenteus (Temminck, 1844) and Apodemus geisha (Thomas, 1905). To solve this controversy, the type material of Mus argenteus Temminck, 1844 in the Leiden museum is re-examined.
